After a couple of days to digest the events of WordCamp OC, we wanted to provide to, the single reader of our blog, a recap. Here are the key points:
Seriously, the school provided so many resources for the event that went above and beyond what would be considered generous. Thank you!
Matt and I sat in on the Jetpack-powered Plugin Development talk and picked up this gem. As a company that does several WordPress installs a month, this file can automatically handle several pre-set settings during the install process. Since we like saving time, picking up this nugget alone made the event worthwhile. John Hawkins, a WP ninja in his own right over at 9seeds in Las Vegas, agrees.
Our good friend Luke Pilon over at Mobiah gave a great talk on Mobile Strategies and Geolocation. Shared the surprising fact that 3 out of 4 sites are not using a mobile version, which is a bit shocking. When you consider how far smartphones have come and the fact that even my 68 year old mother has an iPhone…mobile should be a requirement, not a luxury.
There was a serious debate raging in the Visually Speaking talk that carried over to Twitter. What kind of people vigorously debate ‘above the fold’ with web design on a sunny Saturday you ask? People who are passionate about what they do and care about user experience is the answer. While I doubt either side convinced the other, as long as we keep on having these conversations, the internet is going to be better for everyone else.
Cody Landefeld gave a great talk on the thought process behind web design. Specifically the use of wireframes. We have been using wireframes for our complex projects at Binary for a while and it’s great to see the word is getting out to end users on the importance of taking a Strategic Approach to Theme Design.
The place is like a movie set and has some of the nicest folks you could imagine. It’s also home to Haven Gastropub, which is now on my list of top 5 places to eat anywhere. The stuff that chef Greg Daniels comes up with will knock your socks off. Try the Chicken and Waffles with a craft beer…you won’t be sorry.
Jeffrey Zinn and Brandon Dove over at Pixeljar did an great job with this event. We have been to several WordCamps and this is one of, if not THE most organized WordCamps out there. Great job guys!
You read that right folks. WordCamp is coming to San Diego July 16th. We have locked down SDSU as the venue and tickets went on sale today. Be there or be square!
It’s funny how you go to a session planning to learn about one thing and pick up some amazing tip about something totally unrelated! That install.php trick is going to come in handy over and over again!
Hope to see you guys in San Diego, too!
Cheers
Great observations here. I deeply agree with the mobile front! Let’s do SD now!
Hi there, I’ve been working with WP for years now, but, don’t know a soul in the WP world here locally, so, just wanted to say hi and connect … and give you another reader
… I’m really interested in learning more about the install.php file uses as well and will be looking for that tutorial John Hawkins speaks of … I read that you guys have an office downtown now? Whereabouts are you located? I’m just outside of downtown in Golden Hill~
