We bought a whole bunch of tickets to WordCamp Orange County coming up on May 14th. Our plan was to give them away to all of our friends, but it turns out we don’t have that many friends. Now that the event is sold out we feel bad about having these extra tickets just sitting around. So, why should we give you a ticket? Let us know why you deserve them in the comments.
This event looks like it’s going to be great, the speaker lineup & venue will be phenomenal.
Booyah, WordPress!
Update: Going to let this run till Saturday: 4/30
Everyone has a great reason to want to go to WordCamp, the only fair way to select a winner is a random drawing. Using Random.org, the two lucky people are: Art & Jonathan. Thanks everyone else for playing, sorry we don’t have more tickets to give away.
Art & Jonathan, please check your email and reply to me ASAP.
I would like the tickets because the more I learn about WP the more I realize that I’d be better off hiring professionals to do it. I’ve never been to a camp but it looks like it will provide the basic understanding of what’s available, what’s in the works and the ability to network with those who understand the platform.
Thanks for the opportunity. It’s cool what you’re doing with the tickets.
As a wordpress user and web developer I am very eager to learn advanced techniques that will enhance my services as a web developer. I am also highly interested in
meeting new people and making new friends that I can potentially partner with to develop larger projects. My business partner/developer and I have been talking about the opportunity of getting in and attending the wordcamp for the last two weeks. We would be most gracious to recieve the tickets and attend.
Thank You!
Additionally I would like to add why I deserve these tickets…
1. Because I don’t…
2. Because I was the 2nd responder yet maybe would have been the first if it were not for an interruptive call from the girlfriend, and my young business partner and I have been talking about this opportunity for weeks. Perfect for Two Tickets.
3. Because I care so much I have been following all the comments and wishing we could all get in.
I kinda feel bad that I only have 2 tickets to giveaway…
Wow….with such a great response, why not put on your own WP School. I, for one, would love to find a live session WP Camp that meets once a week to go over the latest WP updates, plugins, themes, strategies, CSS inserts, etc.
There are plenty of online Tutorials but they are outdated within a month! Plus, a live class would allow for Q & A as well as real time help.
Just a thought…
Yes! What a fantastic idea… if you find something like that would you be so kind to let me know? I would LOVE some “real time” help!!
Hello WP world I am recent graduate of the Art Institute, San Diego. I have been working with the University of San Diego California as the UCSDNews webmaster for the past year and recently got laid off due to budget cuts. I have gone completely freelance with my business partner Gary, and have recently learned all my clients want a WordPress system. This seminars will greatly benefit our growth as a start up freelance company and enhance or developmental performance.
…heaven knows, I need all the help I can get! I had an idea and a concept and grew it into a WP platform based website with the help of some very creative people…although they are kind enough to charge me “friends and family” rates, it’s time to cut the cord and take it all over myself. I only need one ticket.
Gary makes a good point but I’m old and I want to prove that this old dog can still learn new tricks. I think I probably have shoes older than him.
I’ve discovered WordPress couple years ago and since then I haven’t needed any other platform for all my and my client’s websites. Learning everything I can about WP become my main purpose and this would be my first Wordcamp if I am able to get in
It’s really awesome what you are doing with the tickets and I hope I will be able to receive one ticket!
Thank you!
Hey Matt,
WordPress has actually given me a lot. I was put down for over a year after a bad accident. I had to figure out a way to make a living without walking. I got into WP and started doing some web development. I ended up with a great job and have fun every day. I’d love to be a bigger part of the community and meet some people in my area and maybe give back somehow.
Thanks for the chance. Have an awesome day!
All the other folks have experience with WordPress and probably deserve to go more than I. I am a WordPress newbie. Never used it, although I certainly know about it as I am a Flash/Photoshop guy. I want to build a site and start a blog that are WordPress-based, and that’s why I’m interested in the word camp. I jumped out to the site to grab my ticket the moment I heard about it, but I was already too late. I’m just hoping now that you’ll want to bring one more new person into the WordPress world! Whatever you decide, I thank you for the consideration.

After all… I’m a new-born in L.A. … just a stranger in this town! How else will I find my perfect WordPress Pro to help me?

I am new to WordPress and its community, and I feel like I dropped in half way through an amazing movie!!! Since I started building my site with WP, I have exponentially increased the sophistication and richness of my publications and I am in all honesty, hooked! I am profoundly enjoying every moment of working with and learning WordPress and have become a genuine advocate of the platform. The reason I really want to go to WordCamp is to expand my knowledge and insight within a community of other motivated and like-minded WordPress users, developers, and enthusiasts. Additionally, I want to be able to contribute to the community in whatever way I can.
Had a client. He wanted WP and I knew nothing about it. Told him I’d look into it. He went in another direction, I started a blog site and now I am hooked. But After a month and a half, I realize how little I know. Would love to get immersed in it at camp. I only need 1 ticket in case you want to split them. I am truly amazed at the the respons I have gotten from people in the WP community. Very helpful and interesting people who are willing to share their knowledge.
I consult with K-12 schools helping them integrate technology into their classroom curriculum. My work puts me in contact with thousands of teachers and hundreds of thousands of students. I feel WordPress is an amazing tool with exponential applications for education. I want to attend WordCamp so I can learn how to leverage this tool to promote our ideas, share information with educational leaders more effectively and basically change the future of our country by equipping teachers and students with the tools to compete, use higher order thinking skills and creatively solve our worlds problems with the assistance of computers and the information they have access to.
Hello,
I am a web designer in Long Beach and have recently been teaching some PHP and web programming classes at Cal State University, Long Beach. A colleague of mine has paired up with me to teach a class on WordPress this semester (we’re almost through), and we would like to further our knowledge of the WP platform so we can bring that back to class with us next semester. Originally, we were planning on taking a small group of students to WordCamp, but tix are out.
If selected for these tix, we will focus on bringing the functionality and depth of WordPress to our students, enriching them to use that knowledge and to teach others. In an age where California has suffered huge hits to education, we feel that every little bit we can give back will help to support our college students and help bring back our educational system to what it once was.
You know, many folks would just let those extra tix sit in a corner, but you are doing a very noble thing by offering them out like this. We appreciate those who go the extra mile to help others out.
Cheers,
Dave Winter
Dave,
I’m in Long Beach too man. I’m right by the college. I’d love to meet some other WP folks. You think I could sit in on a class sometime? I’m all self taught. I’d dig seeing what some others are up to.
Jonathan,
Seeing as that this coming week is the past of the Spring semester (followed by exam week), it won’t really be possible this school year. I’ll speak to some folks about having you sit in sometime in the Fall. I think there is charge for those who wish to audit, but it shouldn’t be much. Thanks for the interest!
-Dave
Right on man. Just thought it would be a cool way to hang with some local WP peeps.
Oh man,
I’m so excited. I just yelled in my office. Ha ha. Thank you so much Matt! I truly appreciate the chance and the ticket. Thanks again!
Does that mean there is still one ticket left or did Jonathon get them both? Also does that mean that Bin Laden will not be using his ticket?
Never Mind..My Bad. I missed the post on “Art” Congrats guys. I guess I’ll have to wait for LA and maybe SD
You should definitely go to BOTH.
L.A. already past! We missed it… but there is always next year.
Question:
A friend of mine is currently considering putting together a 2 day workshop to help Solonpreneurs, Small Biz’s, etc. to build their websites through WordPress. She is looking for WordPress pros to teach and also looking for feedback to see if this is something that would easily fill…
Any feedback? She said it would be a max. of 250 seats…
Do you think it’s something you would be interested in attending?
Do you think it would be easy to fill all 250 seats?
Any suggestions on where to hold it?
Any great teachers out there that would like to instruct?
She want to position it as a guarantee that the attendees WILL walk away with a completed site [obviously with some criteria in place] and a hands on way to LEARN WordPress and even specific templates like THESIS and HEADWAY…
Any feedback would be super appreciated!! THANKS!
LA’s event is on September 10th this year. You can get more info on their site: http://2011.wordcamp.la/
There are *tons* of people that need sites put together, not sure if 250 people in a single room would be the best way to handle it. I can imagine lots of questions slowing the entire process down.
OMG!!! I’m so stoked!!! I had no idea. I thought I had missed the L.A. Word Camp… this is super news!!! Thanks so much, Matt!!!
We’ve done classes before. Not WP specific, but related to doing business on the web.
250 is a lot if you’re going to build that many sites. Considering you’ll have to get all their hosting info etc unless you’re going to host them and include that in the cost of the class.
My advice would be to record the whole thing for starters. That way you can package the class after the fact and sell that as well to people who can’t attend.
Just make sure you’re giving good, quality information and not rehashing stuff people can find on the web. I’ve seen that happen before.
However, some people just need to learn in a class. It’s how they absorb the information.
Good luck!
Thanks Jonathan!
It would be set up to accomodate people who already have their hosting set up and wordpress downloaded but can’t figure it out to make their site look the way they want it to.
Each class would be level specific and would have more than one instructor… to walk around and help peopole through the steps that the main presenter will be demonstrating. Beginning to end.
There seems to be a lot of people who are at this point and can’t figure out how to do the things they want to do.
Are you an instructor? Are you a wordpress pro? Are you savvy with either THESIS or HEADWAY?
April,
I’m not an instructor, but do use Thesis a lot. That’s a great idea, I would just start small. It’s hard with Thesis, because I would say something like you’re only covering the available options not any custom .css. Everyone will want there site to look different, but even a little outside the available options would take time to code/test/code again.
However, for example with Thesis, you could just go over the menu selections and what they mean, adding a header, and using the mediabox and post images. That would be quite a class. If you did something like that you could probably get the DIY guys to let all Thesis users know there was going to be a class.
Just my 2 cents.
Thanks Jonathan!
Would it be something you would be interested in?
Also, how much do you think people would pay for something like that?
Thanks again for the feedback!!!
Hey April,
Like I said, I’m not an instructor, and I wouldn’t know about the cost, sorry. Wishing you the best of luck though.
Thanks again Jonathan.
Actually the info is for a friend of mine. She and I might get together and do this or I may pass… still trying to decide if there is a need for it. It seems like there is. Anyway, I don’t think you would have to be an “instructor” per say, the idea is more that you are a “pro” in the space and can help others who work live on their sites… but, it’s okay if your not interested.
Anyway, you’ve been super helpful. Thanks so much, again for the feedback!
April… check this out. It may be helpful. Sean Glumace is a graphic designer and webmaster for Golden West College. I attended one of his beginner workshops and it turned me into a WP junkie… Hope this helps:

Thanks Art!! And “kudos” on your big WIN!!!
