BinaryMobiah invades Disrupt Hackathon

A list minute invite from Mobiah morphed into an overnight adventure at the Disrupt Hackathon with Luke & Matt Pilon.

We had some challenges coming up with an idea of what to create. We tossed around several ideas;

  • Location aware email analytics
  • Secret Santa WordPress functionality
  • Google Maps heat map of something dynamic
  • Another awesome WordPress plugin

After much discussion (and free Red Bull), we settled on one of our favorite subjects beer!

We were all complaining about the lack of a centralized database of beer information that is publically available. We started scouring the web for more information and Luke came back with the Open Beer Database. A little more searching and I uncovered a CSV of all the data on Google Groups, huzzah! We were in business.

WordPress & the JSON API plugin are going to power everything. I got WordPress running on my laptop and started the process of importing 6000+ rows of beer data, styles and breweries. PHP wasn’t happy processing that much data, so I had to make several configuration changes to make it happen. Eventually we were able to import the data and got a local API running. :)

Over the next couple of weeks we’ll be cleaning up the import and making everything publically available.
